Why do I need a control unit upgrade?

Over time, household energy consumption has increased as homes simply need more energy. Australia's safety standards for electricity have also been vastly improved. With these positive changes, we learn more about the integrity and protection of the electricity that flows through our homes. The integrity of a home's wiring, especially at the switchboard, is crucial to ensuring your family's safety. Antique porcelain fuses are very outdated and not safe. If you want your home to be electrically safe, you need the protection of a modern RCD (Residual Current Device).

Why are ceramic fuses unsafe?

Ceramic/porcelain fuses have been designed as a safety feature for homes for many, many years. Fuses, like circuit breakers, only protect the integrity of the cables (when connected and connected correctly). They will only turn off the power when there is an overload (too much current is drawn in an individual circuit) or a short circuit (when electricity flows in an unintended path, for example when the hot (red) and neutral (black) wires touch each other).

I'm sure most of you have seen the plug on ceramic fuses and the wire inside them... What many people don't realize is that the wire is a certain size for a very important reason! This fuse wire is a specific size because the wire that supplies power to this circuit is a certain size. This wire of a certain size can only safely handle so much current before it starts to overheat. If the current exceeds the current capacity of that fuse wire, it will break and cut off the power supply. This is a vital item for your home security!

cable protection

  • A standard lighting circuit in a home will usually be connected with 1mm wire.
  • The 1mm wire typically handles up to 10A (13A under perfect conditions).
  • A porcelain fuse usually has a wire rated to handle a maximum of 8A.
  • If one were to replace the fuse wire with a larger wire that didn't break before the current reached 10A, it becomes a serious electrical hazard.
  • If this circuit keeps pulling more than 10A, this wire can handle it; the wires will overheat, melt, short out, and possibly even start a fire.

If that wire didn't break and the current output kept increasing, due to the house load demand; wires can quickly overheat, causing an internal electrical fire. This can be extremely dangerous! As Central Coast electricians, we at Coast Complete have been in many homes that have had major electrical problems and even fires in their electrical cabinets. This is caused by a homeowner trying to reset the fuse with too long a wire. I even saw one where a nail is used instead of a wire!

What is a DCR?

An RCD is aresidual current device. It's a device that saves lives! An RCD is a sensitive safety device designed to prevent people from receiving an electric shock. It also protects the integrity of wires (like a circuit breaker or fuse), which in turn protects you, your family, and your home. RCDs offer personal protection that old school fuses and simple circuit breakers do not (since they only protect the wire). A residual current device will control the flow of electricity through one or more household circuits. An RCD will almost instantly cut its power if it detects that electricity is flowing in an unintended path, such as a person touching a live component. This will significantly reduce the risk of death or serious injury.

Fuse Vs Disyuntor Vs RCD

A fuse is connected with a wire of a certain size that will break if the current flowing through it is too great. That's when you 'blow a fuse'.

A circuit breaker is designed to "trip"/trip when too large a current flows. It has an electromagnet that pulls to break the contact, interrupting the supply when there is excess current.

A Residual Current Device (RCD) is designed to "trip"/interrupt when the current difference between the output current in Active and the return current in Neutral is too great. This difference occurs when a person touches an exposed wire or energized item.

What is involved in a control panel upgrade?

Upgrading a telephone switchboard varies from house to house and budget to budget. Upgrading your board will involve replacing all ceramic fuses with modern, safe circuit breakers and RCDs. This takes place in a clean room along with rewiring/staying the cables behind the panel; before finishing with the tests of the entire installation and housing.

It can also include adding smart meters, replacing asbestos panels, new service fuses, and upgrading consumer power cables. This is to make your home as safe as possible while meeting the required Australian electrical standards.

  • let's inspect theMEN(main neutral grounded) and make sure thatmain ground conductorr(electrode) is still in proper condition according to updated electrical standards. This may also need to be updated to ensure your home is electrically grounded.
  • The entire installation will require7 mandatory electrical teststhat we are going to perform This ensures adequate protection by checking that there are no underlying failures or problems.
  • This will take 2-4 hours to complete for a standard dashboard update.

Control unit upgrade extras

  • Asbestos board replacement

Again, the oldest houses were built according to ancient rules and regulations. These standards allowed distribution panels to be manufactured fromasbestos. While replacing this panel is not a mandatory requirement during a frame upgrade; We definitely recommend it due to the cancer causing health issues associated with asbestos! Unfortunately, not all electricians are legally allowed to do this, as it involves disconnecting their meters. Fortunately, at Coast Complete Electrical Solutions we have twoLevel 2(ASP) Central Coast electrician who can do this safely and legally.

  • Update your consumer network

Your home will use a lot more energy today than ever before. If you have air conditioning, heater, washing machine, dryer, stove, oven and other kitchen appliances; so you're already drawing quite a bit of current, probably close to 40A. More than 10 years ago, homes were generally only supplied with 6mm cable, which is capable of handling up to about 40A.

If you're considering installing a swimming pool or air conditioning or any other large appliance, you'll likely need to upgrade your consumer's power cords. Your customer's network cables are what connect your home to the utility lines that come down the street.

If it's ageneral serviceto an attachment point on its eaves or, from a column boxUndergroundto your call center. Typically, we'll upgrade to 16mm cables that handle just over 70 amps. This gives you the freedom to install most electrical appliances without worrying about overloading the circuit.
